Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has declared June 25th a national holiday to commemorate Genz who died or were injured during the anti-Finance Bill protests of 2024.
Speaking in Machakos alongside other opposition leaders, Kalonzo hailed the youth, particularly Gen Z, for their courage and resilience in demanding better governance.
“We shall be marking June 25, 2025, as a Gen Z Revolution Day. This will be a holiday for all Kenyans to celebrate the new liberation championed by the Gen Zs,” Kalonzo stated.
He sharply criticized the government for what he termed as “criminal silence and inaction” in compensating the families of those who lost their lives or were maimed during the protests.
“We must respect the youth of this country who paid the ultimate price. Their parents still wait for justice. It is a national shame, we have to redeem the nation,” he added.
The declaration comes almost a year after the June 25, 2024, protests, when thousands of young people took to the streets to oppose the Finance Bill, which introduced steep tax hikes. The demonstrations turned historic when protestors breached police barriers and stormed Parliament after lawmakers passed the controversial legislation.
