3 charged for conning contractor 500,000

Three people were on Monday arraigned in Makindu court and charged with conning a local businessman 500,000 in the pretext of selling him, seeds that could cure cancer.

Scholastica Katulu, Catherine Kavumbu and Bernard Nyamai appearing before Principal Magistrate Jared Magori denied two counts of cheating and conspiracy to obtain money through false pretense.

Katulu also faced a third charge of registering a mobile phone sim card with a false name.

The court heard that the accused conned John Mutunga the money at Emali township on November 6.

They were each released on a cash bail of 150, 000 or a 250,000 bond with a surety of the same amount.

The court also directed that the investigation officer, Joseph Ratemo to get access to the accused call logs, Mpesa transactions and bank statements for three accounts in Family Bank Kibwezi branch , Post Bank(Kibwezi) and Kenya Commercial Bank Headquarter branch between November 5th-8th to assist in the investigations.

The case will be mentioned on December 2nd for a pretrial while a full hearing is slated for December 18tha.

Sub-county Police Commander Okumo Dullo said the trio has been involved in a series of conmanship within the area.

Dullo urged residents to be careful to avoid falling prey to such conmen.
