On the 30th of May 2019, Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua announced that the county was constructing 4 stadiums in Ikombe, Masii, Mavoko, and Kinyui. According to the Governor then, the new Machakos stadiums were to be complete in December 2019. Close to a year later, the stadiums are nowhere near completion despite having gobbled up over 30 million.
Appearing before Machakos County Assembly, the Chief officer youth and sports revealed the status of the stadiums.
Mavoko and Masii stadium are at 10 percent completion with no works currently ongoing after disagreements with the contractors. The project have since been readvertised but the sites are now bushes and nothing is ongoing.
The Kinyui Stadium in Matungulu East is currently at 40 percent complete, 19 million has already been paid out of the contract sum of 49 million.
Ikombe stadium according to the chief officer is at 50 percent and 14 million has been paid to the contractor Anabra Enterprises out of the 49 million contract sum.
Last week, Machakos County Assembly discussed a report by the youth and sports committee on the status of the stadium. The committee urged the sports department to get contractors who have the capacity to implement projects.
“There is a need to ensure that the contractors who are awarded have the capability of executing the projects. The chief officer, Youth, and Sports should also prepare implementation work plans with regard to the timing, procurement aspect, and financing. Proper planning for the projects will ensure that funds and contractors are available early in the financial year and also prevent a situation of pending bills to arise.” The committee report read in part.
“The department should endeavor to complete the other stadiums as envisaged in the County Integrated Development Plan.” the report went on.
The stadiums that according to the governor were to commence in July 2019, Mitaboni, Kangundo, Ekalakala, Kalama and Machakos town are yet to commence.
