Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior has proposed the increment of the age of consent in Kenya to 20 years. According to Mutula, this will give children ample time to study without disturbance.

“I disagree with the suggestion that the law that sets the consent age be reviewed from 18 years. Most children that are 16 years and below are still in school. If given an opportunity as a lawyer I would suggest that the consent age be increased to 20.” Mutula said.

“This will enable them finish school and especially now that we are talking about 100 percent transition.” He added. He further cautioned that Kenya should not start copying laws from other foreign nations as that was threatening the future of the young people.

“If the court passes that law, we will firmly oppose. If the motion is brought to the Senate I will refute. If it is being done in other countries we should not follow as some of those countries are proposing other things like same sex marriages which are not allowed by the constitution here.” the senator added.

Mutula also asked the courts to hasten cases of sexual offences against minors. “This cases should not last more than two weeks as the witnesses are the child, the doctor and may be the parent…There is no reason that this cases should not be concluded swiftly.” Mutula told a local radio station.

This comes after three court of appeal judges proposed a review of the law to lower the age of sexual consent to 16. The three are Daniel Musinga, Rosslyn Nambuye and Patrick kiage.
