Sand harvesting in Mumbuni North was tuesday banned by a resolution of the Machakos county assembly. The motion to stop the same for a period of 3 years was presented to the Assembly by the area MCA and the deputy speaker Paul Nzaui. According to Paul sand harvesting has resulted in road damage and huge gulleys which causes a risk to the locals who use the roads everyday.

The MCA said the harvesting has to be stopped as several members of his wards have lost their lives after falling in the gulleys or being swept by fast moving waters that result from sand harvesting. The motion was supposed by all MCA’s who were present at the time of the legislation.

Hon. Nzaui also called on the government to invest in the rivers once the harvesting is stopped by building gabions, bridges while engaging the local youths in the program. The affected rivers include; Kasinga, Manza whose bridges have been swept away and locals are forced to spend nights on the other side of the bridge once it rains as crossing is impossible.

There has been pressure for Machakos county government to regulate sand harvesting in the county so as to protect the environement. Just monday 3 people lost their lives in Muvai river Kilome, Makueni county as they were engaging in sand harvesting.

  1. I come from Masinga inyanzaa. We have hundreds of young men whom we are jobless. The sand businesses is the only thing we do rely on. Now our kids are in school and we can run life without stealing . If u want to stop this sand harvesting allow us gun ourselves and u won’t get us on the river. It’s a must we sell the sand or we come for the monies in your pockets.
