Businesses in Machakos County can now breathe a sigh of relief after Machakos MCAs slashed taxes in the Machakos County Finance Bill 2020. The amendments to the report which had been tabled by Chairperson Finance and Revenue Collection committee Stephen Mwanthi were adopted by the house Tuesday.
With many businesses struggling due to the effects of Covid-19 and short working hours occasioned by the 10 pm to 4 am curfew, the reduced taxes according to the MCAs will help revitalize the businesses.
Below are highlights of the businesses that will benefit from the tax reliefs.
Hawkers and Boda Boda’s
Hawkers in urban areas will now be paying 300 Ksh per month from the earlier 500. Those in peri-urban areas will pay 100 from 300 per month and in rural areas 50 Ksh per month. Boda Boda permit per month will now be 100 from the proposed 200 Ksh.
Miraa Transporters and Sellers
Miraa Transporters will now be paying 5,000 Ksh. from 10,000. Miraa sellers permit per month was reduced from 10,000 Ksh. to 1,000 Ksh.
Building plans and construction
The Assembly approved the reduction of the Building inspection fee from 7,000 Ksh. to 5,000 in urban areas and Ksh. 2,000 in peri-urban and from Ksh. 3,500 to Ksh. 1,000 in rural areas to encourage developers which will, in turn, create employment and more opportunities.
The Assembly approved the reduction of the application fee for registration from 3,500 to 1,000 and Inspection per annum from Ksh. 5,000 to Ksh. 2,000.
Machakos MCAs approved the reduction of fees for umbrella-like shade from Ksh. 2000 to Ksh. 5000 and Branded tents per day from Ksh. 4,000 to Ksh. 1,000. Additional charges per square meter for illuminated signboard from Ksh. 5,000 to Ksh. 3,000.
Penalty for non-payment of a liquor license will now be applied at the rate of 2% of the liquor permit instead of Ksh. 20,000. General retail alcoholic retail license bar will also be reduced from Ksh. 20,000 to Ksh. 15,000 in urban; from Ksh. 15,000 to Ksh. 10,000 in peri-urban and from Ksh. 12,000 to Ksh. 7,000.
Hotel alcoholic drink license is set to be reduced from Ksh. 30,000 to Ksh. 15,000 in urban; from Ksh. 17,000 to Ksh. 10,000 in peri-urban and from Ksh. 8,000 to Ksh. 7,000 and Restaurant retail alcoholic drink license be from Ksh. 20,000 to Ksh. 15,000.
Wines and spirits general retail alcoholic drink license will be reduced from Ksh. 18,000 to Ksh. 15,000 in urban; from Ksh. 15,000 to Ksh. 10,000 in peri-urban and from Ksh. 12,000 to Ksh. 7,000 and Night club charges from Ksh. 70,000 to Ksh. 50,000 in urban; from Ksh. 25,000 to Ksh. 20,000 in peri-urban.
MCAs present lauded the Stephen Mwanthi led Finance and revenue collection committee for the people-friendly Finance bill 2020 urging locals to take advantage of the reduced taxes to grow their businesses.
