Kitui County Governor Charity Ngilu Wednesday flagged off large-scale artisanal mining in Kawala, Kitui East sub-county.

Speaking in the area Ngilu noted that the county had not been blessed to be an agricultural area and through the commencement of the mining, the county was now going to get resources to enable it to fight poverty.

“This county is a mineral-rich place. We must exploit these minerals and ensure locals here benefit”. Said Ngilu.

The launch comes just days after Ngilu got approval from the Mining ministry to commence the exercise in the mineral-rich county.

The county artisanal mining committee was also gazetted paving the way for the commencement of mining along the stretch from Kasaala in Kitui South through Mutitu and extending to Usueni in Mwingi North.

Several mining groups in the area such as Kawalite and MKM have received earth-moving equipment to aid them in the mining.

Ngilu revealed the County Government was in the process of establishing a mineral testing and value addition center.
