Mwala: Residents Raise Fears of Cholera Outbreak

The business community from Ikalaasa in Kibauni, Mwala Subcounty has called on the Department of Public Health and Sanitation in the county to come to their aid.

They said that they are in fear of contracting Cholera because of the lack of toilets in the town.

They noted that the toilet that was in the market caved in and now people were relieving themselves behind shops and that would be a health hazard to the community.

“Here at Ikalaasa market we have a big problem, the toilet that used to serve us in the market caved in, and with the heavy rains that we are having we are at a big risk,” said one of the traders in the market.

“We now don’t have a toilet and are at risk of contracting cholera because people can’t use the toilet anymore and now they are relieving themselves behind the shops. Ikalaasa is a big town and a lot of traders visit that’s why we need a toilet as soon as possible,” he added.

Last month several lives were lost in Machakos County due to a cholera outbreak that was in several parts of the County. Mlolongo and Athi River were the most affected due to poor sanitation.
