Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has announced that Households in Machakos County will from 1st May 2020 to 31st December 2020 not pay water bills. This according to the Governor is aimed at cushioning them from the effects of Coronavirus.

“On my part, I am waving all water charges for household consumption in Machakos county from May 1st until the end of the year, Dec 31st, 2020, as we continue working towards free domestic water in the whole of Machakos County.” A statement by Mutua read in Part.

Mutua also challenged the Government to come up with more economic actions to cushion mwananchi from the effects brought up by the corona pandemic.

He asked the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) to waive electricity bills for household consumptions for the next six months.

“I urge the Kenya Power & Lighting Company(KPLC) to waive electric bills for household consumption for the next six months…I also call on public water companies around the country to also not charge water for household consumption for a similar period,”Mutua said.

In a statement sent to media houses, the governor also urged the National Treasury to waive VAT charges on cooking gas and paraffin so as to allow households to have more money to purchase food and cater for their basic needs.

On the electricity waiver Mutua has said that it can be waived to a certain level of usage enough for household use such as lighting and use of household electric appliances whereas they can charge for overuse.

“Given that last year KPLC declared a whooping profit of Kshs 334 Million and studying the company’s declared financial statements and revenue, it’s clear that KPLC can afford to waive power charges for households for even a year.”

Below are some of the reactions on the announcement by the Governor.

Jacob Nyandieka said, “It’s easy said than done, we don’t want this kind of PR from leaders. Some of us already are being pressured by landlords to pay last month rents and other bills. This is NO joke, the govt ought to come up with measures to cushion vulnerable Kenyans.”

Kitetu Geff said, “I definitely concur with your excellency Governor. The government is really doing good is severely specific areas as far as combating corona virus especially in testing and information sharing. However, more efforts are required in sensitizing the people about the disease.”

Jeremiah Mutisya Munguti added, “Good move H.E the Governor for exempting Machakos County people from paying water Bill’s. I hope the KPLC crew in our county will follow suit. Bravo Sir, keep it up.”
