Mutua hints at Supporting Kavindu, says UDA should not have its way

Maendeleo Chap Chap party Tuesday withdrew from the Machakos by-election senatorial contest. According to a statement by Governor Mutua the decision was in respect of a call by President Uhuru Kenyatta to find a peaceful, amicable, and uniting way forward during the upcoming by-elections.

“Unity is essential to fast-track development and alleviate poverty. We have to end the culture of divisive and winner takes it all politics. Maendeleo Chap Chap Party supported the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and in the spirit of consistency, we support his development agenda and the political stability of the Nation.” A statement by Chap Chap to newsrooms read.

” In this regard, so as to ensure that the National Unity Agenda succeeds and that detractors such as UDA, do not get an opportunity to roll back the achievements so far, we have decided that The party extends goodwill to the President, to Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga and other BBI partners by withdrawing its candidate from the forthcoming by-election.” The statement went on.

With Mutua saying that the candidate withdrew for the sake of BBI, the move is believed to be hinting at Support Agnes Kavindu who is considered as the handshake candidate.

The Governor in the statement termed the move as a strategic and tactical decision made in the best interest of the members and supporters.

Katuku is believed to have been among the top contestants in the senatorial by-election. An opinion poll released by Africa Center for Social Science and Research studies on the upcoming Machakos Senate By-election showed that Wiper Senatorial Candidate was the most popular candidate with 55 percent followed by Maendelo Chap Chap Mutua Katuku at 17.5 percent.
