The Wiper party has suffered a setback in its hopes to clinch the Machakos Senatorial seat in the upcoming byelection after its acting Secretary-General Peter Mathuki’s family endorsed Maendeleo Chap Chap Candidate Mutua Katuku.
This endorsement has also called for the former EALA MP’s brother Joseph Mathuki alias KeeKee who had shown interest in the seat step down in favour of Mutua Katuku.
Speaking after meeting at Sky Lodge in Masinga Subcounty, Lawrence Mathuki Kiminza father to Peter Mathuki said that they held talks as a family on whom they were going to support for the senatorial seat and settled for Katuku and do they will give him the support he needed. They managed to convince Joseph Mathuki to step down and support Katuku promising to mobilize the entire family and Masinga people to vote in Katuku as the new senator.
“We have had consultative meetings as a family on who to support for the Machakos senate seat scheduled for a by election on 18th March and we have arrived at a conclusion that we should back up Governor Alfred Mutua and his candidate Mutua Katuku. As a family, we rally up behind Katuku as we believe he is the incoming senator,” Lawrence Mathuki said.
“My son Joseph Mathuki who had shown interest in the senatorial seat has agreed to step down in favour of Katuku as he did not have a major party backing him he was an independent candidate and he has agreed,” he added.
The Mathuki family has been a significant family in Masinga and Machakos county politics given that one of their own Peter Mathuki is the Secretary-General of Wiper Party and also in 2017 he had vied for the governorship seat in Machakos as the deputy governor to Wavinya Ndeti.
The move by the family is expected to send shocking signals to the Wiper party who have fielded Johnson Muthama’s ex-wife, Agnes Kavindu as their candidate and given that Peter Mathuki is one of Kalonzo’s trusted lieutenants.
