Makueni County Assembly Speaker Douglas Mbilu on Wednesday dissolved the Speaker’s panel. The move that caught the house by surprise was not justified by the speaker with politics said to be the reason behind the move.
Makueni speaker’s panel which is also known as chairperson’s panel consists of 5 members.
The members of the speaker’s panel included Ken Mutuku who is the Kithuke Kitise MCA, Nick Muthoka of Emali ward, Nicholas Maitha of Thange ward and Nominated MCAs Sharon Mutinda and Martina Kimilu.
“Pursuant to the provision of standing order number 19 of the County Assembly standing orders, I wish to notify you that the following members have been discharged from the speaker’s panel. One, Hon. Ken Mutuku first chairperson, Hon. Nicodemus Muthoka second chairperson,” Mbilu said.
“Hon. Nicholas Maitha third chairperson, Hon. Sharon Mutinda fourth chairperson and Hon. Mutinda the fifth chairperson. I have since written to the Assembly business committee as required by the standing orders to consider and approve other members to the Speaker’s panel.” He added.
When the Makueni County Assembly resumed sessions this year, there was controversy on the membership of the Assembly business committee which resulted in a heated debate with some of the members claiming political parties were not consulted. A section of MCAs also protested the inclusion of Deputy Speaker Harisson Mutie’s name on the list.
