Makueni: Principal Apologizes After Student sent home for fees committed Suicide

Lilian Muthoni, the Principal of Kathekani Secondary School in Mtito-Andei, Makueni County, has issued an apology to the family of David Kasyoka a form 3 student who tragically took his own life on October 3, 2024, after being sent home due to unpaid school fees of Shilling 7,000.

In a statement, Muthoni expressed her deep sorrow over the incident, clarifying that her actions while extending her heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and acknowledging the profound impact of the loss.

“Upon learning of the saddening news I was deeply hurt until I was hospitalized because of the strong attachment I have with children, I don’t see them just as my students but as my own flesh and blood,” Muthoni said.

The principal explained that she had no ill intentions and was simply following standard school procedures. She acknowledged the devastating outcome.

“I am not defending myself. but I know Parents are knowledgeable about the school’s standard procedure. It’s not wrong to send students home for school fees but where the problem is lack of communication and I think that’s what led us to the situation we are in,” she added.

Lilian Muthoni continued as she expressed her disappointment in the issue, noting that the boy could have been accompanied by his parents to school to explain the situation.

“I encourage my students to come to school with their parents when they cannot clear school fees,” she stated.

The incident has sparked discussions about the challenges faced by students and families in managing school fees, highlighting the need for compassionate approaches within educational institutions.
