County Executive Member for health in Makueni County Andrew Mutava Mulwa has sacked one nurse accused of negligence that caused death of an infant at kitise Dispensary two weeks ago.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday Mulwa said that according to a preliminary report by the council of nurses the nurse exhibited gross misconduct after he failed to undertake his duties as expected thus causing death of a newborn baby.
The Nurse is said to have also lied to the mother of the child that the baby died after delivery yet the baby was breathing.
Furthermore after the baby was found to be alive the nurse failed to call for an ambulance to transfer the baby to Makueni referral hospital where the mother was forced to use public means.
“The next day the doctors left the baby uncovered the whole night after lying to the mother he was dead. He also failed to ensure an ambulance transfers the baby to Makueni referral hospital. Because of this we have written to the human resource department for the immediate interdiction of the said nurse,” Said Mulwa.
He urged all health workers to ensure they discharge their duties diligently according to the law.
Dorcas Kambua the baby’s mother had told journalists that she was rushed to the hospital after developing labor pains.
She said that she gave birth to a baby boy weighing 5kilograms but the baby failed to cry.”After delivery the nurse told us the baby won’t survive because he didn’t cry after birth meaning he was born with a dead brain,” she told journalists.
She said the nurse took the baby to quarantine where he locked him in a room and instructed the mother not to go near him.
After 30 minutes the said nurse came back and told the mother the baby is dead. However after the nurse finished his duty the lady went into the room where he found the baby still breathing.
“I sent a guard to wake him up where came and covered the baby where I breastfed him and found means to take him to Makueni referral hospital.
However the baby was pronounced dead on arrival at Makueni level four hospital.
