Makueni County has launched a Horticultural Aggregation Center and Packhouse at Wote – the county Headquarters.
The facility is set to enhance the processing, packaging, and marketing of mangoes for both export and local markets.
According to a press release, the facility will also serve as the central collection point for mangoes from local farmers, reducing post-harvest losses and providing exporters with direct access to high-quality produce.
Export mangoes will fetch Ksh. 12 per piece, while mangoes for the local market will attract between Ksh. 15 and Ksh. 19 per kilo.
The initiative is expected to boost incomes for farmers by providing a direct link to exporters, who previously faced logistical challenges in sourcing quality produce from the region.
Makueni CECM Agriculture, Irrigation, Livestock, Fisheries and Livestock Development Joyce Mutua revealed that they were targeting to load 50 trucks with mangoes for exports asking farmers to reach out.
“We have started a pack house and aggregation center at Wote near the police station. The facility will pack top-quality mangoes for export, mature not ripe, and without any diseases. We need to load over 50 trucks with export mangoes. If there is a farmer with Mangoes they should reach out to ward admin or ward agricultural officer.” CECM Joyce said.
