Makueni Leaders blame National Government for delay in Thwake dam completion

A section of Makueni County leaders now blame the National Government for the delay in completing the Thwake Multipurpose dam.

Mavindini Ward MCA Jonathan Kimongo and Wiper party chairperson Mbooni constituency Peter Mwanthi while addressing the media claimed that the National Government deducted 5 Billion from the total sum set for the project, as it was revealed earlier by Makueni Senator Daniel Maanzo.

The leaders now demand that the National government allocates money so as to facilitate the completion of the multi-billion project that is set to supply water to Makueni and Kitui, as well as Machakos county.

“If this money is not released within the shortest time possible, as leaders we must come together and decide on the next move. Even if it’s through demonstrations, we will do what it takes to ensure the project is completed, ” Kimongo said.

On his part, Mwanthi added that they may be forced to lead protests if the matter is not resolved.

“All elected leaders including Members of Parliament and Senators should unite and claim back the money. The Kamba community should also stage protests in a bid to push the matter”, Mwanthi said.

The completion date for the construction was June 2022 but this was not met due to delays by Covid 19 pandemic. The Ministry of Water and Irrigation extended the deadline to June 2024.

However, the construction is now at a halt as workers on Sunday, May 7 downed their tools protesting the delay in payment for their March/ April salaries.
