Makueni county emerged top in the Athletics Kenya Southern region cross country championship that was held at Machakos people’s park Saturday. Makueni overally had 67 points followed by Machakos with 44 and Kitui 9 points.
The participants were athletes from Machakos county, Makueni county, and Kitui county.
Speaking to Mauvoo News, Assistant Secretary Joseph Ilovi revealed that athletics are not just to waste time but it is a way of uniting the youths and all the participants.
“From this championship, some participants will obviously get employment and livelihoods, it will still reduce the high rate of drug abuse,” Joseph Ilovi said.
All teams will choose the winner who will represent them during Africa cross-country athletics which will take place at the Ngong Racecourse on the 13th of February. From this, the winners will participate in the Africa Cross-country athletics championship which will be held in Togo from March 6th.
The championship was sponsored by Coca Cola company and Mulleys Supermarket among other well-wishers.
In the 5K girls, Machakos had 11 points, Kitui 4 points, and Makueni 6 points. In the 6K boys, Makueni had 13 points, Machakos 7, and Kitui one point. In the 6k Under 20 women category, Makueni led with 14 points, Machakos 5 and Kitui 2.
In the 8k under 20 men, Makueni had 17 points, Machakos 4 points and Kitui zero and in 10 kilometre senior Machakos had 12 points, Makueni 5 and Kitui 4.
