Makueni county to immensely benefit as construction of AMREF university begins

Makueni county is set to benefit following the groundbreaking of the AMREF international university in Itulu village, Makindu.

Apart from locals benefitting from jobs and material supply opportunities during the construction, once the university is completed, locals will get discounts on the fees.

The university is also set to train and upgrade the skills of health workers who enroll there. They then can use the same skills to improve the quality of healthcare offered in the county. The university is also set to open up Makindu and grow the town.

Dr. Gitahi Githinji AMREF CEO praised the County Government for giving them land to set up the university noting they approached several counties and it’s only Makueni that agreed.

“Thank you for giving us this piece of land. When we had the vision to start a university the commission for university education asked us to show them a 50-acre piece of land so that they could license us. We went to several governors, and the only Governor who agreed to give us land is from Makueni. He bought the land and gave us the title and we got the certificate of interim authority.” The CEO said.

Governor Kibwana expressed optimism that the construction of the university will be a game-changer in the economy of Makueni and Makindu.

“As we proceed Makindu 2 and Makindu 1 will join, the value of land will also increase. This place will change. Daktari, people from abroad are visionary and have begun buying land in this area.” Kibwana said.

Prof Joachim Osur the Vice-chancellor noted that they will discount fees for the students from Makueni.
