Makueni county citizens are set to benefit immensely from the Billion Dollar Business Alliance that was launched Friday by the county governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana together with representatives from USAID, ICRAF, UN World food program, the university of Nairobi and DANIDA. According to Governor Kivutha the alliance is a multisectoral water development initiative to benefit locals.
The program entails rain water harvesting from households,private and public institutions such as schools and hospitals and the consequent storage in tanks ,food security for all households in the county, construction of sand dams and water pansin all rivers for domestic use and irrigation purposes, solar energy use in all boreholes,protecting hills and vegetative cover from deforestation and planting more trees, drip irrigation in households, storage facilities for farm produce and value addition.Access to affordable credit for farmers.
The county government of Makueni has been credited for life changing projects such as the universal health care project, equipping of the hospitals with power generators and other equipment, the fruit processing plant among other initiatives that have seen locals benefit immensely from devolution.This has also made the county a benchmark for other counties.
Some of the locals who spoke to the voice of Ukambani said the projects are wonderful initiatives which when implemented will help fight food insecurity and water problems in the county and consequently help in fighting poverty.
