Fatuma Zarika, the World Boxing Council (WBC) female world super bantamweight champion has hinted a November fight to defend her title. The match is set to be held in Machakos.
Zarika who visited Machakos County sports office at Kenyatta stadium disclosed that she preferred to defend her world title in Machakos.
Zarika was hosted by Machakos County chief Officer Sports and Youth Henry Kioko and Sports Director Angella Nganga.
The boxing icon also announced that she will also be partnering with Machakos county sports department to host the first boxing boot camp ahead of the international boxing championship in November in an effort to grow boxing in Machakos.
“I know that boxers worldwide were gunning to secure a fight with the champion. I am ready to prove to the world that I am the best.” Zarika said.
On Saturday September 2nd 2018, Fatuma zarika humbled 20 year old Mexican Yamileth Mercado at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre to retain her title that she won in 2016 against Jamaica’s Alicia Ashley in a 10 round Match that wowed Kenyans.
The 34 year old Zarika eventually won the fight by beating 20 year old Mexican 2-1 to defend her title. she was awarded 94-96, 97-93, 99-91 by the judges. However, Yamileth Mercado seemed unhappy with the judges decisions.
Zarika currently holds a record of record to 31 wins, 12 losses, and two draws. She is being sponsored currently by betting giant Sportpesa.
Zarika appreciated Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua’s efforts to uplift sports in the County by availing sports facilities and equipment to the youth. So far the county is constructing five new stadiums in an effort to nurture talent and to grow sports.
