Tensions continue to escalate within the Machakos County Assembly following a two-week suspension of all plenary and committee sittings, as political wrangles threaten to paralyze county operations.
Kalama Ward MCA Boniface Maeke has come out strongly, accusing Deputy Speaker Stephen Mwanthi of plotting to oust Speaker Anne Kiusya in a bid to seize her position.
Speaking to the press, Maeke claimed the push for impeachment is driven by personal ambition rather than genuine concern for leadership or service delivery.
“What I can say is, people should stop being greedy. You cannot be asking for more when you have not even delivered on the mandate you have been given,” Maeke stated.
The county assembly has been on suspension for two weeks following a scuffle over the Speaker’s impeachment, a move that Maeke says is not only ill-timed but also dangerous for the county’s development trajectory.
He warned that continued suspension of the assembly risks halting essential services and critical development projects.
“The reason I’m opposed to the impeachment of the Speaker is because Machakos County is already losing a lot, and we only have two and a half years left in office,” he said.
Make expressed frustration over the standstill, revealing that prolonged inaction could cost the county a significant amount in development funding.
“If we lose another week, we risk losing Sh1 billion in World Bank funding for municipalities. There are a lot of things that are on hold while we’re outside here,” he warned.
Maeke urged all leaders to uphold the law and prioritize service delivery over political maneuvering.
“We do not want to lose years. I have already lost two weeks of service to the people of Kalama Ward. I had a lot of projects I wanted to present at the County Assembly, and now I can’t because of this situation,” he lamented.
Maeke also cautioned Governor Wavinya Ndeti against aligning with individuals harboring vested interests in the Speaker’s seat, urging her to focus on leadership and development rather than power games.
