Business operators in Machakos Mitumba market Wednesday elected their officials who will represent them for the next five years.

The process that was conducted by Market Social Development Committee, saw a very low turnout raising concerns of the traders’ interests on the union matters.

Josephine Mutiso retained her position as the Machakos Mitumba Association chairperson while Antony Musyimi was elected as the Secretary. Antony Gikonyo Vice- Secretary, Nicholus Mutisya vice-Chairman, and Esther Singi the Treasurer.

The Leaders who were elected promised to deliver their mandate effectively to ensure their grievances of the Mitumba traders are well represented.

They however promised to strengthen their working relationship with the county government urging them to avail the market with enough water, provide masks and sanitizers that will help in reducing the spread of covid 19 especially at the market where keeping social distance sometimes is a bit hard because of the population.

However, some of the traders complained that the voting process didn’t meet their expectations as they only heard names of their representatives mentioned without allowing them to go through the process of voting.

“We can’t just raise hands up and say we are okay. How? I wish we could vote one by one. Maybe someone had a different opinion and felt ashamed of not raising their hand.” One of the traders said.
