Machakos County MCAs Wednesday passed a motion that devolves the management of County Ambulances to the Sub County level. The motion was tabled by Cosmus Ngula Masesi who is the health Committee chair and the MCA Matungulu East.
According to the Matungulu East MCA, the management of ambulances at the County level has been ineffective and expensive.
“At times the sub county health officers are not aware of the operations of the ambulances. This really leaves a big gap which I saw the need to address with this motion that was passed today.” MCA Ngula told Mauvoo News.
This will now see Minor repairs and the maintenance of the Machakos Ambulances moved to the sub county level. Fuelling is also set to done from a petrol station within the sub county.
“Some ambulances go to more than 40 kilometers to just fuel. This is not economical at all.” MCA Ngula added.
According to nominated MCA Margaret Mwikali who was the acting speaker in the session that passed the motion spoke to our reporter and said that the move will also improve the general operations of the ambulances as the sub county is a smaller unit.
“Sometimes when an ambulance is required you will hear stories that there is no driver, or may be there is no fuel. This can be risky especially if the patient is in a critical condition. All this is set to change with the passage of the motion.” She said.
In February 2014, Machakos County Government launched 70 ambulances for each location under the comprehensive health care program.
