Machakos Matatu Owners Association to hold demos

Machakos Matatu Owners Association (MAMOA), an umbrella body representing 28 Saccos and over 3,000 matatus (public service vehicles) has announced plans to hold a peaceful protest on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

The demonstration will begin at 6:00 AM from the Machakos Bus Park and proceed along Machakos-Makutano Road, ending at the Governor’s office.

According to a letter submitted to the Machakos Police Station, MAMOA is calling for the protest to address grievances with the county’s transport department. Key issues cited by MAMOA include Lack of Regulation and Non-Compliance with Routes, Unilateral Decision-Making by Transport Officials, and Allegations of Corruption and Unprofessional Conduct.

MAMOA alleges that the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads, Transport, and Public Works has failed to enforce proper regulations for Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), resulting in issues with compliance for designated routes and parking zones.

The association claims that the transport department has consistently made decisions without consulting or collaborating with stakeholders, disregarding calls for transparency and meaningful public engagement.

“An alarm that despite repeated calls for transparency and collaboration, the transport department continues to make unilateral decisions without adequate consultation or opportunity for stakeholders to share concern and insights.” The letter stated.

“Such an approach disregards the principle of public service which rely on respectful and meaningful engagement with those impacted by departmental policies and actions.” MAMOA noted.

MAMOA further accuses the CECM of showing disrespectful behavior toward matatu operators, as well as allegedly engaging in corrupt practices, including demands for bribes from matatu operators—actions that they assert violate constitutional standards for integrity in public service.

“Corruption; The CECM for transport has been extorting money from the operators contrary to chapter 6 of the constitution leadership & integrity.” MAMOA alleged.

The association has requested police protection for the upcoming protest to ensure a peaceful gathering. MAMOA’s concerns have also been shared with the Governor’s office, the County Secretary, and the relevant officials in the transport and devolution departments.

As the planned protest approaches, matatu owners and operators are hopeful that their concerns will prompt a constructive response from county officials, addressing the issues that affect the daily operations of the public transport sector in Machakos County.
