Machakos County health department is planing to upgrade and equip six existing health facilities to level four status. This is in a bid to enhance closer and better service to locals of the nine sub counties.
This was announced by the acting Health County Executive Dr. Ancent Kituku who had appeared before appointments Committee of Machakos County Assembly on Thursday .
Some of the health centre’s to be upgraded include Athi river health center in Mavoko sub county, Kimiti health centre in Matungulu sub county, Masinga health centre, Ndithini health centre, mutituni and Kalama health centre.
“The county government is in the process of ensuring each of our nine sub counties have a level four hospital and the easiest way to go about it is upgrading health centre’s in high density areas.” Dr. Kituku said.
Some of the level two dispensaries will also be upgraded to level three status. The department will be seeking services from community health workers.
He also disclosed that the Department is planning to do away with roofing asbestos on several institutions including Mwala level four hospital.
“I’m aware that asbestos is a cancer risk and this problem is in most of our old health facilities including Kangundo. As a department we need to sit down and know where the funding will come from to replace the roofs. Most importantly how and where we are going to dispose the asbestos because it’s a known health risk.”
