Machakos County Assembly Wednesday adopted a report that proposes free school milk program for ECDE children in the county. This comes as hunger starts to kick in after the rains failed.
While Speaking to journalists after the assembly adopted the report, Muthesya MCA Daniel Kiilu who is also the Chair education committee thanked his fellow members for supporting the committee’s report.
“I want to thank my fellow Machakos MCAs for adopting the report which my education committee tabled. We face drought in Ukambani and we have been thinking about this issue. When we had the Nyayo milk, attendance in schools was good and pupils were happy.” Kiilu said.
“Signs of hunger are now starting to be seen and my committee had been tasked to bench mark with other counties on the implementation of the program. We went to Kericho and Mombasa and we came up with a framework for free milk.”
Muthwani MCA George Kingori who had previously presented a similar motion expressed his joy on the passing of the motion that will see pupils benefit from free milk.
Mumbuni MCA who is also the deputy speaker Paul Museku urged the County government of Machakos to pilot the free milk program in schools that are located in the remote places within the county. The report was adopted without opposition by all members.
Just this week, Machakos based businessman and the chair of contractors Kilei Mutinda called on the Government to reintroduce school feeding program to cushion school going children from the ongoing food shortage.
Earlier in June, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka tasked Ukambani Governors and MCAs to ensure enough funds are set aside to enable the counties to fight drought which has emanated from the failed rains.
