Locals from Machakos County have complained of increasing cases of corruption at the Machakos lands office and asked president Uhuru Kenyatta and the EACC to intervene as they are being forced to pay ‘kitu Kidogo’ for them to get their title deeds which should be accessible at no cost. According to one of the locals who has been trying to access title deeds since the beginning of this year, ‘Mr. Kioko’ – not his real names, he is almost giving up on his title deeds as the amounts being demanded are too high than what he can afford.

According to our sources, most of the staff at the lands office have been working there for close to 10 years. Some of the locals who spoke to our Machakos reporter want them transferred as they are unable to access title deeds which they mostly using for getting loans from banks.

The Jubilee Government has been distributing title deeds to different parts of the country but not to all locals as some still have to rely on the local lands offices. The malpractices at the office have also been blamed for the current challenges being faced in the sub urban parts of Mavoko, Athi River and Syokimau.
