Kitui Fire Department on the Spot for Late Response as Fire Razed an Apartment at Site

Kitui County Fire response team has been put on the spot by the residents of the Site area locally known as ‘Slay slay’ in Kitui town after a fire razed a one-storey apartment after the fire brigade failed to respond to the fire on time.

According to the area residents, they called the emergency response team only to show up after an hour with an empty fire engine.

“We noticed the fire on the apartment at around 3 pm and alerted the tenants who rushed to salvage the situation before calling the fire brigade to come since the fire was increasing at an alarming rate. Funny enough, when the brigade came, there was no water to put out the fire, and we had to fetch water to extinguish the fire ourselves,” a resident told Mauvoo News.

The brigade was forced to call a water tank to come and supply water to extinguish the increasing fire. The building, which was also under construction also lost some of the construction materials such as timber, two empty water tanks, iron sheets, and other construction materials. The residents blamed the county government of Kitui for not responding quickly to the situation.

“They arrived late and were not bothered to offer a quick response to the situation, they didn’t even wear protective gears to shield from the fire, and we are pleading to our governor to do something about it because we can’t afford to lose our property because of careless mistakes and we are paying taxes,” Muithya a resident at the premises lamented.

The residents also requested the county emergency response team be equipped with more fire brigades to avoid such delays in case of similar incidences.

There were no cases of injury or death reported after the fire outbreak. Our efforts to reach out to the officer in charge of the Kitui county response to ascertain the cause of their delay bore no fruits as he was not available on call.
