Kitui: Family Seeks Traditional Justice as 16-Year-Old Killed by Husband is Buried at Night

The family of Joy Friday Munani, a 16-year-old girl brutally murdered by her husband, has expressed their desire to have the case withdrawn from court and settled traditionally by the clan.

Munani was laid to rest on Thursday night at around 8 p.m. in Musukini, Mwingi Central, Kitui County, in a quiet and hurried burial.

Her tragic death and night burial shocked the community, sparking discussions.

Her husband, 29-year-old John Wambua, was arrested last month in a gruesome turn of events.

Police on patrol intercepted him at dawn, carrying a bag containing dismembered parts of Munani’s body.

Upon searching his house, authorities discovered a blood-soaked kitchen knife, stained clothes belonging to the victim, and a pool of blood, evidence suggesting the murder took place inside the house.

Following his arrest, the prosecution was granted permission to detain Wambua for 21 days to allow for further investigations.

However, in a surprising turn of events Munani’s family want the case out of court and have the clan mediate and decide on the way forward.

“We cannot lose two people and that is why we are requesting the government to allow for the case to be withdrawn from court so that we can deal with it at clan level. When such a thing happens, a fine is paid to the bereaved family,” said a family representative.
