There was celebration and renewed hope for a brighter future in Kangundo Sub-county, Machakos County, on Friday as more than 1,000 youths graduated after completing short professional courses aimed at equipping them with job-ready skills.
The graduates were trained in various fields, including electrical engineering, beauty therapy, catering, plumbing, and other technical disciplines.
The program was fully funded by Kangundo National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).
Speaking during the graduation ceremony, Kangundo MP Fabian Muli urged the graduates to put their newly acquired skills into practice. He said the government had invested in their future because it believes in their potential and encouraged them to use the skills not only to earn a living but also to create opportunities for others.
“We have invested in your future because we believe in your potential. I urge each one of you to go out there and put these skills to work—not just to earn a living but also to create opportunities for others,” said Muli.
He emphasized that technical skills are key to addressing youth unemployment and reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting vocational training as a pathway to self-reliance.
One of the beneficiaries, Jane Nduku, who completed a beauty therapy course, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity. She said she never imagined she would have a chance to acquire such skills for free. With what she had learned, she now plans to start her own beauty business and help support her family.
“I never imagined I would have a chance to acquire such skills for free. With what I have learned, I can now start my own beauty business and help support my family. I am so grateful to the MP for stepping in to help us,” she said.
During the event, several bodaboda Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) received empowerment funds from MP Muli, in partnership with leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza government. The initiative aims to strengthen small businesses and promote self-employment among young people in the region.
Among the leaders present at the ceremony were Masinga MP Joshua Mwalyo, Mwala MP Vincent Musau, Machakos Town MP Caleb Mule, Kitui South MP Rachel Kaki, and Nominated Senator Tabitha Mutinda, among others.
