Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called on President William Ruto to expedite the enactment of amendments to the Elections Act of 2011 which includes a requirement for all political parties to adhere to the two-thirds gender rule.
Speaking during the G7 summit at Kenyatta Stadium Machakos, Kalonzo urged Kenya Kwanza governors present at the event to relay his message to the President, stressing the need for political will to swiftly enact the proposed amendments.
“I want to send Kenya Kwanza governors here present to go and tell President William Ruto to use the political will and expeditiously enact amendments to the Elections Act. Under that amendment, all political parties will be required to adhere to two third gender rule when they are doing their party nomination.” Kalonzo said.
“If he fails to act, he risks losing a critical opportunity, as this small window may soon close,” Kalonzo warned.
He also urged women in Kenya to be independent-minded, rather than being sycophantic in their political choices while praising the leadership of Machakos and Nakuru counties – women governors as examples of progress.
“If the current leadership can inspire womenfolk, we could move from the G7 group to G24 and even G30,” Kalonzo predicted, referring to the possibility of expanding women’s representation in leadership roles.
