Makueni Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana has announced plans to kick start the privatization of the county owned Kalamba fruit processing plant so as to improve its fortunes.
Speaking while attending the AGM of Makueni Fruit Processors Cooperative society in Wote, Kibwana said the privatization is to ensure the firm makes a profit and help farmers with their produce.
“Government doesn’t do business. We want to privatize this and have cooperatives as shareholders. Government and strategic investors can also come in and get a stake.” The Governor said.
Kibwana further lauded the European Union for reopening the mango export market calling on stakeholders to work together to fight the fruit fly that destroys a lot of the mango produce.
“The European Union has reopened the mango export market. We must meet their standards especially by ensuring we fight the mango fruit fly and ensure not one person meets the standard but everyone, you will earn more from the mangoes.” The Governor added.
The 30 million Kalamba fruit processing plant according to the Auditor General report in the 2018/2019 Financial year had become a liability. According to the report, the county pumped 30 million into the project but the factory realized only Sh28.56 million.
