Kitui County Women Representative Dr. Irene Kasalu has announced that she will not defend her seat again in 2027.
During a recent meeting with Kitui residents, Dr. Kasalu emphasized that she has gained sufficient experience as the Kitui County MP and so she is now ready to vie for the gubernatorial position, traditionally dominated by men.
“You have elected me for two terms as your County Representative. I believe I have what it takes to compete with men in the Governor’s race having gained experience after my two terms,” she stated.
Kasalu pointed out that the Women Representative seat is meant to empower women and prepare them for other elective seats that are also contested by men. She said that she is ready to take over from Governor Malombe since his two terms will be over in 2027.
“The County Women Representative position was created in the constitution to empower women politically. Therefore, come 2027, after Dr. Malombe completes his term, I am ready to take over as the next County Boss to serve the people of Kitui.” Kasalu said.
Kasalu called on the people of Kitui County to support her candidacy and encouraged those interested in contesting for the Women’s Representative position to do so freely.
Her remarks underscore her confidence and readiness to break new ground in Kitui’s political landscape.
