In a bold move to promote environmental conservation in schools, the Naturehub Collective Community Organisation (CBO) has launched its Greening Schools Initiative at Ultimate Leaders Academy in Muumandu, Machakos County.
The initiative kicked off with the planting of over 200 tree seedlings within the school compound. Naturehub also pledged to establish an on-site tree nursery that will propagate between 5,000 to 10,000 seedlings, destined for both the academy and neighbouring institutions.
Speaking during the launch, Naturehub representative Frederick Kioko emphasized the importance of instilling environmental stewardship in young learners.
“This is not a one-off activity. We are rolling out this initiative progressively across more schools and communities. The environment plays a crucial role in our daily lives and overall well-being,” said Mr. Kioko.
The planned nursery will support long-term reforestation and greening efforts within the community, contributing to broader environmental goals.
Ultimate Leaders Academy head teacher Patrick Muange praised the initiative, describing it as a practical and timely intervention.
“The tree planting exercise has been very successful. Our learners now understand the value of conserving the environment, not only for clean air and rainfall, but also as a potential source of income. These young people will be tomorrow’s conservationists,” Mr. Muange said.
He urged parents and learners to extend the tree-planting efforts to their homes and communities, stressing that sustainable change requires collective responsibility.
The Greening Schools Initiative is in line with Kenya’s national strategy to achieve at least 10% forest cover and integrate environmental education into the school curriculum.
