A huge fire Monday evening destroyed property worth hundreds of thousands after it consumed a dormitory at Katelembu center of excellence, Katheka Kai Machakos. It is not yet clear what caused the fire but electrical fault is suspected to have caused it as a contractor was for the better part of Monday welding windows and doors in the affected dormitory.
Fire engines from Machakos town responded swiftly but there was not much left to save but they contained the fire from spreading. The school’s Board of Management Chairman Mr. Muoki confirmed the news and that the students lost most of their property that is stationery, beddings, clothing and personal effects. The dormitory hosted 70 students.
Machakos majority leader Francis Ngunga who is also the area MCA blamed the school for the cheap labour that resulted in loss of valuable property for the school and for the students. He urged school principals to work with professionals and avoid quacks. A close look at the welding machines showed the wires lacked insulations which were very risky even for the operators.
Machakos county deputy county commissioner said investigations into the cause of the fire have commenced and they will take action against anyone who was involved.
