Makueni: 4 Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Possession of Elephant Tusks

Four men, Joshua Mwengea Mwanzia, Mashuba Ivuti, Tito Munguti, and Muema Kamuti who were arrested in June 17, 2018 have been sentenced to five years in prison for possession of two elephant tusks valued at Sh1.6 million in Makueni County.

Senior Principal Magistrate Benson Ireri delivered the verdict, which also included a fine of Sh1 million each.

The four were arrested following a tip from a local to the Kenya Wildlife Service officers about a group of individuals in Kibwezi township seeking potential buyers for elephant tusks. Throughout the trial, the prosecution, led by Catherine Ngari, presented compelling evidence, securing a conviction beyond reasonable doubt.

The defendants were charged under Section 92(2) as read with Section 105(1) of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013, for dealing in wildlife trophies of an endangered species without proper authorization.

Demand for ivory remains high, particularly in the East, driving poaching activities across Africa. Despite the international ban on the ivory trade, African elephants are still facing significant threats from poachers.

Kenya has adopted advanced surveillance measures, including the deployment of drones, to monitor and protect elephants and rhinos. Moreover, collaborative efforts involving Kenya Wildlife Service and various stakeholders aim to eradicate wildlife crimes, with a focus on intensified community education, interagency cooperation, and intelligence-driven operations.

Kathiani residents decry increasing livestock theft

Residents of Munyini, a tranquil suburb nestled within the expansive landscapes of Mitaboni, Kathiani in Machakos County, are calling upon authorities to collaborate closely with the community to combat a spate of livestock thefts that have recently unsettled the area.

Unidentified thieves began targeting the hard-earned livestock of local farmers. This wave of thefts has instilled fear and uncertainty among the residents, who depend largely on their animals for their livelihoods.

One resident, whose morning began with an unexpected and disheartening discovery, shared a particularly poignant account.

“I woke up and opened the window, expecting to see my cow where I had left it the night before. But it was gone. Even my dog, which I had relied on for security, was killed,” they recounted, illustrating the boldness and brutality of the thieves plaguing the community.

The incident is not isolated, with numerous others in the community facing similar losses. The emotional and economic toll of these thefts on families is significant, given the value of livestock not only as a source of income but also as a vital part of the community’s way of life.

In response to this alarming trend, residents are urging local security forces to work hand in hand with them, advocating for a community policing approach that might offer a more robust and immediate solution to the problem. This partnership, they believe, could leverage local knowledge and networks to prevent further thefts, ensuring the safety of their property and the well-being of their community.

Kitui:Kasalu rescues two minors impregnated by relative

Kitui Women representative Irene Kasalu has rescued two sisters aged 15 and 17 impregnated by a relative in Iluusya, Kitui South.

While visiting the home of the two girls Kasalu called for fast-tracking of the case to ensure justice.

She disclosed that two suspects are already in custody in connection with the case.

“Although the case should have been reported last year we are grateful the parent came out to report recently. What we are asking for is that justice be served to these little girls whose lives were messed by people known to them,” Kasalu said.

“We want thorough investigations to be done so that the truth can be unraveled and the suspects charged according to the law because the law does not permit anyone to engage in sexual activities with minors,” she added.

Kasalu also promised to take the two girls back to school to continue with their studies which had been cut short.

She decried increased cases of defilement in the county and called upon all stakeholders to speak against the vice.

“If these children cannot get justice here at home they will be taken to a haven where they can be protected and be able to go back to school. We have heard cases involving one-year-old or even seven-year-old children which is very sad,” The Women Rep went on.

She warned parents against using Kangaroo courts to solve defilement cases against their children.
