Calls intensify for Restoration of MacMillan Castle

The historic Macmillan Castle, located near Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park, could soon find new life as a tourist destination if the government heeds calls from locals.

Dominic Nthwao, the chairman of Mukamukuu Farmers and Cooperative Society, has urged the Ministry of Tourism and Culture to transform the iconic structure into a major tourist attraction.

Speaking during the society’s annual general meeting, Nthwao highlighted the castle’s potential to bring significant economic benefits to the region.

“If the Macmillan Castle is made a tourist site, the cooperative members and the local community will benefit immensely,” Dominic said.

Nthwao noted the castle’s proximity to Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park, emphasizing the ease of integrating the two sites into a single tourism circuit.

He further explained that the castle’s development would open up the area for business growth, improved transport infrastructure, and increased employment opportunities.

The Macmillan Castle, built in the early 1900s by American adventurer Sir William Northrup Macmillan, has been lying idle for decades despite its historical and architectural significance.

Currently, the castle houses the offices of the Mukamukuu Farmers Cooperative Society, but its full potential remains untapped.

“If developed, this site would not only preserve our history but also create a hub for local and international visitors, boosting the area’s profile,” Nthwao added.
