Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua’s Tree planting program that focuses on planting at least 50 million trees by the year 2022 received a Major boost Tuesday after the Beryll Foundation Supported the Program with 100,000 seedlings. The donation was communicated by the Founder of the Beryll Foundation Henry Kioko Tuesday afternoon after he visited community nursery tree project in Athi River Mavoko where they are preparing the seedlings to be donated between 2018 and 2020.
The 100,000 tree seedlings include both indigenous and edible trees – that is focused on mostly restoring the lost tree cover in the county and economic empowerment through growing of fruits that can be sold for income to households such as Avocado and Mangoes. Kioko also called upon the youth and women to invest in both indigenous and edible tree seedlings projects while taking advantage of the heavy rains.
During the Launch of the tree planting program at the beginning of March in Kyamutheke, Mutua urged citizens, corporations and NGO’s to help him realize the dream through donation of tree seedlings. The tree cover in Machakos county is at 3% against the recommended 10%.
The Beryll Foundation previously participated in the Millions trees, Million dreams programs that planted 1,000,000 trees in Machakos in the year 2015. According to the CEO Henry Kioko,in order to reach the goal everyone needs to participate in tree planting. He also called upon Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka and the political class to “stop politicking and simply plant a tree for both social and environment good.”
