Eric Mutuku Mwinzi, popularly known as Biez Kaviru, has opened up about losing his guardian to colon cancer, just days after concluding a high-profile cancer awareness campaign.
The musician-turned-activist recently captured national attention after embarking on a four-day walk from Kitui County to Nairobi to raise awareness about cancer.
Kaviru made the journey on foot while carrying a petition letter addressed to President William Ruto, urging the Head of State to declare cancer a national disaster. He later delivered the letter to the President’s office at Harambee House.
Speaking on Thursday afternoon during the Konnect show on Radio Maisha, where he was hosted by Jitabisuleiman, Kaviru emotionally recounted the effect colon cancer took on his family.
He disclosed that the illness not only left them heartbroken but also financially strained, as they exhausted their resources seeking treatment for their guardian.
“We lost our guardian to colon cancer, and by the time he left us, we were completely drained,” Kaviru said. “Because I had a following, I decided to create awareness so that it does not happen to someone else.”
Kaviru’s awareness walk has since drawn widespread public attention and support. Days after completing his journey, he received a warm reception at the Kitui County Assembly, where Speake Katisya Kinengo welcomed and commended his efforts.
Although the President is yet to respond publicly to the petition, Kaviru remains optimistic that the government will take action and consider declaring cancer a national disaster.
