Athi River: Police launch investigations over Apex Steel furnace explosion

Sleuths in Athiriver, Mavoko SubCounty have launched investigations over an explosion at Apex Steel Company in Sokoni Area.

The explosion caused 15 people who are workers at the company to be injured by liquid metal that spewed on them.

According to a police report seen by Mauvoo News a report was made to the police after a loud explosion was heard from Apex Steel Plant.

Police rushed to the scene and found that a furnace with molten liquid had exploded and spewed liquid metal over some 15 workers who were in the plant.

They were rushed to Mutonguni Hospital but later they were transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital where two are in critical condition but the rest are in stable condition.

“It was reported by the night orderly officer ip. Elijah Kamau that while on patrol within sokoni area at 0330 hours, he heard a loud explosion from the direction of Apex steel plant. the plant was visited and it was established that a furnace with molten metal had exploded spewing liquid metal on the workers who were working near the said furnace. It is estimated that 15 people were near the said furnace,” read the report.

“They were rushed to Mutonguni Hospital from where they were referred to Kenyatta National Hospital for further treatment. Two are in critical condition while the rest are in stable condition. The cause of explosion not immediately established,”the report went on.
