Machakos: Businessman Speaks after Protesters Set His Lorry Ablaze

A businessman in Machakos Town, Julius Kiilu, is counting heavy losses after his lorry was set ablaze during Monday’s Saba Saba protests.

Speaking to the press at the scene, a visibly emotional Kiilu recounted how his decades-old business was reduced to ashes in a matter of minutes. He said he started the business on his birthday in January 1993 and never imagined it would end this way.

“This lorry was my livelihood. I began this business on my birthday in 1993, and now it’s gone because of protests,” said Kiilu. “These were not Gen Z protestors. They were paid goons, and they are not even from Machakos Town.”

Kiilu claimed the attackers were determined to destroy the vehicle, which had only empty gas cylinders at the time. He clarified that the loud explosion heard during the incident came from the diesel tanks.

“They tried to break into the lorry but failed. They also couldn’t remove the tyres. In frustration, they decided to set it on fire. You can even see broken glass all over the ground. This lorry has stood here for years, even during previous protests—nothing like this has ever happened,” he said.

Kiilu estimates his losses at over KSh 1 million. He now plans to sell the remains of the vehicle as scrap, saying the damage is beyond repair.
