Over 322 people have so far been arrested and taken to court for failing to wear face masks while in public in different areas of Machakos County. This is according to Machakos county health chief officer Lucas Mwove who spoke to the press Tuesday.
Mwove further revealed that over 26 hotels have been shut in the recent crackdown for not adhering to the guidelines given by the National Government.
“We have so far arrested 322 people for not wearing masks mostly in the areas of Machakos Town, Matungulu, Tala, Mavoko, and Mlolongo. It is breaking the law when one fails to wear a face mask in public. If you arrested you will be swiftly taken to court and fined 20,000.” The chief officer said.
“We are doing a serious crackdown this month of December. We want our people to wear masks. We want public service vehicles to carry the stipulated numbers. They need to have thermoguns.” Mwove added.
The chief officer Health added that several PSVs had been arrested for flouting the regulations.
“26 hotels have been shut for not adhering to the guidelines. Some have no thermoguns, or social distancing. We did a crackdown from Monday and it is ongoing. We have also arrested 5 psvs for not having thermoguns or carrying excess passengers.” The CO revealed.
In his state of the Nation address in November, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a new enforcement unit comprising of national police and county askaris to ensure compliance with Covid-19 health protocols in counties.
