Three suspects were arrested by Nzaui police in Makueni Thursday in connection with the alleged mob killing of a 32-year-old man who was lynched after being accused of stealing a bag of oranges from a farm.
Confirming the incident Makueni County Police Commander Joseph Ole Naipeyan said the three are guards of the same farm.
The incident happened in Kalaani village, Matiliku location in Nzaui sub-county Wednesday night, and was reported to the police by area chief Susan Munde.
The victim Mutua Mutuku is said to have gained entry into a farm in the same village owned by Sammy Kikwalu and stole one bag of orange fruits valued at 2500. The farm guards at the farm spotted him and raised the alarm whereby the irate members of the public responded and subjected him to mob justice killing him instantly.
However, Makueni County police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said the case of suspected murder charges will be opened against the three.
“A preliminary investigation has revealed that the victim was not harmed, the three are guards of the said farm could have arrested the deceased even without attacking him.” Said Joseph Ole Napeiyan.
“The three Kyalo Kiongoa aged 31years, Charles Makuani Sammy and Joshua Munyao Kyalo all aged 23 years have been arrested for interrogation.” He revealed.
The County Police commander condemned the incident and called on members of the public to report criminal activities as opposed to taking the law into their own hands.
“Nobody is above the law despite whatever grievances one might have. Killing is against the law,” he warned.
The body was removed and taken to Makindu sub-county mortuary waiting for an autopsy.
