On the 20th of January 2004, David Kasyoki Mutoo of Katitu Boys breathed his last. To many, he is the greatest guitarist to ever exist in the Kamba music industry.
Kasyoki was an icon in the Benga industry and some of his songs such as ‘Cheza Na Katitu’, ‘Dr. Muia Wa Kalii’, ‘Chunga Pombe’ still dominate playlists and are favorites to many.
However, despite all the fame, 19 years later the family has sunk into poverty. With his music still on Youtube and receiving airplay, the family doesn’t benefit in any way.
Mutongoi TV presenter and Kililimbi show host DJ Biado visited the family to mark the 19th anniversary and found out things were not okay.
Kasyoki’s mother Mary Kayoni in an interview with DJ Biado revealed that Kasyoki’s death was a big blow to the family and he helped the family a lot.
“He was so much respected…he(Kasyoki) used to give me money to do farming. Only God Knows why he took him. Kasyoki was a pillar and he really supported us. His father is old and we only rely on Mango farming. ” Mary said.
Kasyoki’s brother Mutambuki is partly disabled after being involved in an accident. He introduced Kasyoki to some notable music stars back then which propelled his career.
Those wishing to assist the family can do so through Mutambuki’s number 0727762614 Or Kasyoki’s cousin Eunice 0741252325.
Kasyoki’s fans thanked DJ Biado for highlighting the plight of the family and coming through to mobilize support for the family.
